Week One as a Monzonaut
We have liftoff! Through a whirlwind of documents, training modules, people to meet, context to understand, more training, account setup, and a bit more training, it’s been a lot to take on - but I’ve really enjoyed the new learnings as I dip my toes into fintech life.
My first impressions of Monzo? A workplace full of welcoming, diligent and very smart folks.
- I knew banks were regulated, but nothing gives you more appreciation of how much regulation there is than the extensive mandatory training around financial crime, FCA conduct rules, and many other topics.
- Perhaps as a consequence of being a regulated bank, there’s high availability and quality of documentation. (Or I might have gotten used to searching in vast oceans of information from my last role)
- The writing training is excellent, which is unsurprising given the company's public Tone of Voice guide
- Days begin and end earlier. Meetings start on time. There is no five minute buffer. The room dance is clockwork.
When I joined Facebook, I wrote a little letter to myself and tucked it away in an onboarding booklet to review on my “Faceversary”. I've done the same for myself as a new Monzonaut, and I’m looking forward to the coming year.
But before then, more onboarding...
p.s. I have no idea how they did it, but one of the very things I received after setting up my laptop and access to my emails was recruiter spam. Quite impressive, but also...no thank you 🙃
